What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is nothing but the white flakes of dead skin cells on the scalp that accumulates on the scalp and the hair to cause persistent itchiness and foul smell. Dandruff blocks the pores of the scalp which often results in hair fall. In extreme cases, the hairs look dirty and greasy.
- Dry Skin Related Dandruff
This dandruff is basically common in winters. People tend to use warm water to wash their hair in winters. This leads to dry skin and flakiness. The people who use hair styling tools that work at high temperature are more vulnerable to this kind of dandruff.
- Oily Scalp Related Dandruff
The sebum oil is secreted by the scalp and it should be washed properly to avoid the accumulation of oil. The accumulation of sebum oil causes the oil to mix with the dead skin and further results in an itchy and dirty scalp.
- Fungal Dandruff
Fungal Dandruff is caused due to the rapid growth of the fungus called Malassezia. The fungus is always present on the scalp and grows at a very slow rate but excessive oiling could trigger the growth of this fungus and it eventually results in dandruff.
- Dandruff Caused By Seborrheic Dermatitis
Te parts of our body where the sebaceous glands are present in higher amounts, like scalp, eyebrows, face, neck and behind the ears, are more susceptible to this chronic inflammatory skin condition. It is caused by the inflammatory reaction to the yeast which is naturally found on the surface of our skin.
- Dandruff Caused By Psoriasis
When the immune system starts attacking the skin tissues, it leads to the formation of new skin cells at an alarming rate. This rapid development does not give enough time for the removal of dead skin and that triggers the formation of flakes.
There are various causes of dandruff. The common causes are irregular and improper shampoo habits, excessive oiling of the scalp, using warm water or heat generating hair styling tools, climatic changes, etc. It is important to maintain the hygiene of your scalp and hair if you are having dandruff.
